On today’s post, I review the last electronic book written by Alister Benn “Seeing the Light”, available as a 95 pages PDF, Ipad friendly.
From time to time, you find one of those books which really open a door, give to your knowledge a serious leap and can really mean a before and an after. A couple of weeks ago, Alister Benn came with such a book.
“Seeing the Unseen”, released as en electronic book in English (Spanish version apparently on going) has really become THE book about Night Photography. That simple.
I came across Alister Benn a few years ago, while looking for some information about night photography on the web. The first thing I found was a gorgeous tutorial about how to photograph the invisible. Later on we got in touch and friendship sparked. Many of you might know that Alister and I have been close friends for some time already. We also founded together with our wifes the site Whytake.net – The Global Community of Nature Photographers. You might think that for this reason what I have to say about him or his products is of no objectivity. Well, take for the opposite, I really know what I am talking about.
After several years devoted to explore the new possibilities of night photography that modern cameras have made possible, Alister Benn has produced a comprehensive and ultimate guide to cater not only for all those who show the slightest interest in photographing from dusk to dawn, but also to all those who just want to discover a new world of photographic possibilities. “Seeing the unseen” is a 95 pages ebook packed with all the information about how to photograph and exploit the creative side of night.
The book is really well structured, exquisitely well written and leaves not a single stone unturned about night photography. You can quickly realize this book is both for totally beginners or advanced night photographers. All of them will find something they did not know before. But what is more important to me, it is not only the content which is incredibly valuable, but the logical and well structured way in which it is covered. Throughout the 8 main chapters of the book, all elements are considered: techniques, composition, creative aspects, preparation, logistics, etc
The 8 main chapters in the book are:
- Available Night Light : It covers the main sources of light we can make use of for night photography and their implications
- The Science of Preparation: How to plan and make the most of your night outings
- Getting started: Preliminary tests and tricks before passing to action
- Exposure: The real meat of night photography. This can be really tricky…or not when it is well explained!
- Dynamic Range: The implications of dynamic range for night photography and techniques to solve the problem
- Composition: If a good composition is paramount for day photography, no reason why to think it is not the same for night photography. However, night photography imposes its own dose of pre-visualization…
- In the field – Introduction: Explained examples of images taken from dusk to dawn
- Equipment: All the gear you need and how to use it in the darkness!
Throughout the book, Alister makes use of his highly pedagogical, plain but deeply inspiring way of writing. Simple words which go straight to the point while at the same time enthralling the reader. The content is so rich that by the first ten pages of the book you will have paid by far for the ridiculously low price tag of 15 USD. As a nice bonus, a great foreword has been written by the equally great american photographer Guy Tal.
Something interesting to mention is a very innovative concept that Alister has brought along with this book: a free Forum “Seeing the unseen”. This forum has been designed to compliment the various chapters, allowing Q&A, technical discussions and a growing database of learning material associated with Photographing Landscapes at Night. There are also Image Critique Forums for registered users to upload images for critique, discussion and feedback. In other words, your learning does not stop when you buy and read the ebook. You have the chance to become active in the forum, making the learning possibilities virtually endless.
All in all, “Seeing the Unseen” is really the Bible of Night Photography we had all been waiting for a long time. I guarantee it will exceed the expectations of any photographer who shows the slightest interest for night photography. Not only that, this is one of those books which will make you interested in night photography, if that was not the case before. This is one of those books which will open to you a new door, a creative outlet you might not have known that existed before. An incredible book for a ridiculous price. A must have. THE book about night photography.

Creía haberte envíado esta respuesta pero en el último momento me ha salido un error y no sé muy bien si al final lo has recibido correctamente o no. Si lo has recibido borra este último (el que te escribo ahora).
Te comentaba que no soy muy dado a los e-books por varias razones:
– La primera es que aunque tengas un iPad para leerlos (no tengo nada de esos cachibaches) la pantalla me sigue pareciendo muy pequeña para leerlos comodamente.
– Lo segundo es que en este mundo en el que hay tanta informacón cuesta mucho discernir entre una obra de calidad y lo que no es a simple vista (sin comprarlo) o lo que es una simple galería maquetada.
Claro, también tiene algo de positivo y es el coste.
En mi caso yo si que me siento muy atraído por la fotografía nocturna, Gemma la verdad es que no. Pero entendida como una extensión de la fotografía de naturaleza o paisaje astronómico. El tema de las luces de colorines y demás no me va mucho.
En este caso le voy a dar un voto de confianza a esta publicación por varias razones.
El primero es porque es una publicación de Alister a quien tengo por muy buen fotógrafo aunque no me acabe de gustar demasiado la fotografía con blendings, HDR y esas cosas (imagino que la fotografía nocturna no será así o no todo el e-book espero).
Segundo porque tu lo recomiendas positivamente y para mi si tu lo has revisado y lo avalas me fío de tu criterio aunque si es verdad que me hubiese gustado ojear como muestra varias hojas (sin ser consecutivas) para hacerme una mayor idea de la publicación más allá de las miniaturas de su web.
Tercero porque creo que puede ser muy cómodo leerlo en el NEC de 27″ a pantalla completa.
Creo que has dicho que va a sacar el mismo e-book traducido al castellano. Pues esperaré a que lo haga y así aunque el inglés lo entiendo bastante me podré concentrar más en asimilar los contenidos.
No sé si tiene fecha de salida aproximada la versión en castellano.

La verdad es que yo tampoco era muy dado a los ebooks, la tecnologia y las tabletas. Pero he cambiado bastante en mi manera de pensar desde que me compré un Kindle hace ya un año…Eso de llevar varios libros encima, en tan solo unos gramos es una auténtica gozada. Por mucho que me gusta el papel, ahora ya siempre busco primero la versión electrónica, y después el libro. Por supuesto, ciertos libros siempre tendrán su lugar primordial en version imprimida (coffee table books o tipo portfolio por ejemplo), pero para otros muchos, la versión electrónica es una gozada. Por otro lado, ofrece una flexibilidad enorme para el autor, ya que el contenido se puede adaptar durante el tiempo, no hay pérdidas de tiempo y dinero en impresión, sorpresas de perfiles y demás (estarías sorprendido de saber lo que ocurre durante la impresión, calando colores como mejor se puede…compromiso es la palabra!). Por otro lado, permite de sacarle el jugo a muchas fotos de una manera algo más interesante, ya que las fotos tienen luz propia, a diferencia del papel impreso que necesita de una buena iluminación.
Por supuesto, mi discurso hubiera sido distinto si no fuera porque el futuro (ya con el Ipad 3) es la alta resolución. La posibilidad de ampliar la foto y ver detalles mucho mas allá de lo que ojo podría observar a simple vista ofrece también una gran ventaja.
Y lo mejor de todo, el autor llega directamente al consumidor, nada de intermediarios que hacen inflar el precio sin ofrecer nada a cambio!
Tras unos años de anti-Ipad, me he pasado al lado oscuro y el otro día apreté el gatillo. Tan pronto reciba el nuevo Ipad haré una pequeña review sobre lo que ofrece al fotógrafo. Pero entre las posibilidades de visión de fotos, llevar tu portfolio digital en alta resolución, los apps tipo Photographer Ephemeris y sobre todo la posibilidad de meterle una tarjeta 4G de un pais determinado y surfear sin que te claven me pareció suficiente.
Con lo que si que coincido es en lo que dices: es muy dificil y sera cada vez mas discernir entre los ebooks que merecen la pena y no. La razón es simple: hoy en día todo el mundo se ha convertido en fotógrafo, autor, escritor y aventurero. Con un blog, una cámara digital de 300 euros e Indesign, uno puede hacer cualquier cosa. Y eso, si cierto maravilloso, lleva consigo que habrá cada vez más, y que entre esa montaña de material disponible habrá muy bueno (normalmente escaso) y muy malo, tendiendo a muy muy malo. Como tu dices, técnicas para mostrar samples o bien reviews de gente se harán cada vez mas necesarios para no tirar el dinero.
Una cosa es cierta para los ebooks: content is king. Las fotos están bien, pero debe haber detrás mucho mucho contenido. Que cuando el lector cierre el libro, sea ciertamente un poco mejor como fotógrafo. Ese debe ser el objetivo de cualquier buen libro, electrónico o no, destinado a la comunidad de fotógrafos. El libro de Alister es un claro ejemplo. Dentro de poco verás los libros que tengo preparados. El primero, en español, inglés y francés ya está a punto de caramelo. De nuevo: content is king.

Ui Rafa, ya me pica la curiosidad por ver que aportes nos sacas. Seguro que son de calidad y si encima son en castellano vas a conseguir un mercado que pocos explotan con calidad!
Si se puede aportar sugerencias no estaría nada mal alguno del estilo del que ha hecho Alister pero más centrada en el revelado en fotografía de paisaje (ya que el se ha encargado de la fotografía nocturna).

Rafael, Lo compre ayer, y ya lo empeze a leer. Esta BUENISIMO! Las fotos especaculares, la cantidad de informacion y contenido de muy alto nivel. Da muchisima informacion valiosa y explica muy bien como lograr resultados.
A diferencia de un comentario de arriba, me ENCANTA tenerlo (este libro) en iPad porque lo puedo llevar facilmente a todas partes (a tomar fotos de noche, y sin linterna (!), por si necesito releer algo), y leerlo facilmente en cama antes de acostarme. La resolucion es fantastica en el iPad 3, y es muy “iPad friendly”.
Se lo estaba recomendando a un amigo aqui en Miami que se esta metiendo en fotografear de noche, y el tambien lo acababa de comprar! Word is getting around! Que bueno.
A, y la posibilidad de poder hacerle preguntas en un forum me parece un beneficio muy atractivo y beneficioso. Eso si no se consigue asi no mas comprando un libro en papel.
